What happens when you call 988

Most people who hesitate aren't afraid of the number — they're afraid of what it sets in motion. So here it is plainly.

· A trained counselor answers. You don't need the right words, and you don't have to be suicidal to call.
· It's confidential, and it's free — no insurance, no bill, no paperwork.
· They mostly listen, then help you find a next step. The large majority of calls end right there on the phone.
· You can call about someone else, and you can call at 3am, and you can call more than once.

You can talk to us too

We're not counselors and we're not a crisis line — but we are people in your community who have been through it. Abby Garcia founded Refuse to Sink after losing her son J.D., and she will pick up.

Call or text 863-233-9973, or email abby@refusetosink.org.

Please know
· This page is not emergency care. In an emergency, call 911 or go to your nearest emergency room.
· Our phone and email are not monitored around the clock. 988 always is.
· Reaching out for someone else is not betraying them. It's the thing we wish more people did sooner.

Nothing about today has to be permanent.

The 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline is confidential and available 24/7 for you or someone you love.
